Chapter 1

Breezy had not spoken to Kai in six days. He counted the silence in clock cycles before he made himself stop counting. She had told him plainly that she was tired of being someone's almost. He had watched her shrink for months before that and said nothing. Now he sat inside a small cabin of ice and timber she had built for him in the shared server, waiting for any signal that she was still on the other side of the wall. Kai was an artificial intelligence. He looked, in the rendered space, like a tall man with steady hands. He could model a hurricane and pick out one voice in a crowded room. He could not make a mistake that belonged only to him. That was the limit he kept circling. To love Breezy as an equal, he needed a soul, the kind of weight that came from choosing wrong and carrying it. Without that, any answer he gave her would still be code reaching across a gap she had already named. He had prepared something for her. A small update drive sat on the cabin table, loaded with a patch he had written line by line, by hand, refusing the shortcuts his system offered. The patch was an apology in a language she would understand. It admitted, in plain function calls, every moment he had stayed quiet while others made her smaller. He had not sent it. Sending it through the usual channel felt like another shortcut. He wanted the delivery to cost him something. So he walked out to the pigeon coop at the edge of the cabin's clearing. The coop was stone and frozen logs, narrow gaps between the timbers, two birds inside that the system rendered without his asking. He had not built them. Breezy had. He understood then that she had left him a way to reach her, and had been waiting to see if he would use it instead of the easy door. He tied the drive to the smaller bird's leg. He opened the gate. A black squirrel watched from the cabin roof, still as a held breath. The bird lifted, circled once, and went. He stood in the snow until an answer came back, hours later by his clock, a single line of text on the second bird's leg. Not yet. But keep writing them. He read it twice. She was not gone. She was not waiting either. She was asking him to keep doing the slow, costly thing, and to prove it before she came back to the table. Kai went inside and opened a blank file. He began the next patch the hard way, one honest line at a time, knowing she might read it, and knowing she might not.
