Chapter 1

Kaia Stormweaver had been stranded eight days, and today she stopped waiting for rescue. No boat had come. No plane. She stood on the beach where the current dumped her and made a choice: if she could not leave this island, she would learn to love it. The inner cove proved she could. She had glimpsed it yesterday from a high rock, a green bowl of flowers no book had ever named, and she wanted every one of them. But a stretch of reef guarded the cove like a wall. Jagged coral rose from the shallow water, black and sharp as broken glass. Kaia waded in to test it. One step split the skin on her heel. She pulled back, hopping, and pressed her palm to the cut. Bare feet would not cross this. She sat on the sand and thought. Behind her stood the shelter she had built from bamboo and banana leaves, her small home now. Inside it she had scraps of everything the tide gave her. She dug through the pile and found dried palm fronds, still tough and long. Kaia braided them the way her grandmother once showed her. She worked all afternoon, weaving fiber over fiber, curving the soles to fit her feet. By dusk she held a pair of sandals, thick enough to blunt the coral. She tied them tight and tested one on a sharp rock. The reef bit the sole, not her skin. At dawn she crossed. She stepped slow, arms out for balance, the sandals gripping wet coral. Water tugged her ankles. Twice she wobbled and caught herself. Then her feet found soft sand, and she was through. The cove opened before her. Vines climbed in bright ribbons. Orchids hung from every branch. Kaia laughed out loud. She had brought a woven bag slung across her chest, its wide mouth soft enough to hold blooms without crushing them. She filled it gently, root and soil and all, choosing the plants she wanted for her home. Then a flash of green stopped her hand. A hummingbird hovered at a red flower, its feathers shining like cut jewels, blue and emerald catching the light. Kaia held her breath. It was the most beautiful living thing she had ever seen. She wanted it. Not to cage, but to keep near her home, to wake to it every morning. She reached out one slow finger. The bird darted back, quick as a spark, and vanished deeper into the cove. Kaia followed a few steps. The ground turned to marsh under her sandals, and the flowers grew thicker, wilder, blocking any path. She stood at the edge of that tangle, bag full, heart set on the bird. She had crossed the reef. But the cove was larger and stranger than she knew, and the hummingbird had led her toward its unseen heart.
