Chapter 1

Kaimana Tidecaller had fed every crew in three ports and won a king's title from none but the first. Now a rival trader blocked his path to Halverson, and Kaimana could not pay to pass. He stood on his deck with his skull-topped halberd in one hand. His holds were full of salted fish, cured by a method no one else on the tides could copy. That fish was worth a fortune in Halverson. It was worth nothing if he could not reach the port. The only safe channel ran between two reefs. The rival's boats sat across it. Their trader wanted half of Kaimana's cargo as a toll. Half his fish meant half his leverage. He would arrive in Halverson too weak to buy the trade-king title he had chased for eight years. Kazi Reef-watcher climbed aboard before dawn. He guarded the outer channels for the clan, and his face carried more scars than most men earned in a life. He did not waste words. He had been hunting whatever kept swallowing Tidecaller fishing boats. "Four boats gone," Kazi said. "The trail runs to the Dead Mouth. Coral that eats sound. I will not go in." Kaimana looked at the blocked channel, then at the far water Kazi named. "The rival's boats sit at the safe passage," Kaimana said. "He does not guard the Dead Mouth." "Nothing comes out of it the same," Kazi said. "That is why." Kaimana knew the shape of a deal when he saw one. The rival owned the safe road. No one owned the road men feared. If Kaimana could pass the Dead Mouth, the toll meant nothing. "Show me the mouth of it," Kaimana said. Kazi took him to the safer edge of that water at first light. The reef sat low and pale. Sound died over it. But Kaimana watched the current. He watched how it pulled and where it opened. He had read tides his whole life. His father had taught him before his father's name meant anything beyond home. A narrow lane ran clean through the coral. The rival did not know it. Kazi had never gone close enough to see. Kaimana took his fleet through the Dead Mouth that night. He ran without lamps, feeling the tide by his hull. Three boats followed his stern. All three came out the far side whole. He reached Halverson at dawn with every crate of fish still in his holds. The rival trader had guarded an empty road. His toll was worthless now. Kaimana had beaten him and lost nothing. But Kazi was right. The Dead Mouth did not send things back the same. As Kaimana's last boat cleared the coral, its crew went silent. When it tied up in Halverson, two men were missing from its deck. No one had heard them go.
