Chapter 3

Morning found Kaimana at the guild office, two channels down from the main dock. Tre Sorvekk waited beside him, webbed hands folded, water still dripping from his vest. Kaimana had promised to free Tre's cargo. Now he stood before a door that answered to no chief. His skull-topped halberd meant nothing here. These clerks bowed to no tide and no crown. The guild man behind the counter did not rise. "The shipment stays until the fee is paid. Storage. Handling. Late penalty." He named a sum that would empty a season's profit. "House Tidecaller carries no weight in this office." "I am king of the three tides," Kaimana said. "Then buy your friend's cargo like a king." The clerk went back to his papers. Kaimana felt the old anger rise. His halberd bought fear at every dock but this one. He looked at Tre. Twelve years of clean trade stood between them, and he owed this debt. Tre spoke first, plain and low. "There is another way. A crew chief works this dock. He owes me a life. I pulled his boat off the Dead Mouth rocks two winters back." Tre's voice went clipped. "He signs the release himself. No fee." "Then why have you not gone to him?" "He fears the guild more than he honors me." Tre met his eyes. "He will not move for a trader. He might move for a witness the harbormaster already trusts." Kaimana understood. He drew the folded sheet from his belt. Tre's own count. The proof that had won his claim in the ledger. He carried a name the guild could not ignore now. They found the crew chief loading crates near the water. He was a broad man with a rope burn across one hand. When he saw Tre, his face tightened. "You cannot ask me this here." "I am not asking," Kaimana said. "The harbormaster entered my claim yesterday. Every clerk read it. You release this cargo, and I tell the harbormaster you kept a clean dock. You refuse, and I tell him the guild strips honest traders two channels from his gate." The crew chief looked from the halberd to Tre's steady face. He owed one life. Now he weighed it against the harbormaster's favor. He wiped his rope-burned hand and reached for his seal. He stamped the release and shoved it across a crate. "Take it and go. Do not come back." Tre lifted his shipment onto a waiting outrigger canoe, its side float steady on the swell. The debt was paid. Kaimana had freed the cargo without coin, using only the trust his claim had bought. But the crew chief had spoken loud. Guild men on the dock had heard every word. Kaimana had beaten one office by leaning on the harbormaster's name. Now the guild knew a chief had reached into their channels. They would not forget it before the title was won.
