Chapter 2

The fairy set Kamare's first lesson at dawn. She hovered near the crowded shelves, wings catching the light, and pointed at Kamare's bandaged hand. "You want spells," she said. "But your hand shakes. A spell needs steady fingers. Yours cannot hold still." Kamare flexed her burned hand. The welt still throbbed. Her fingers trembled when she tried to spread them. "Then teach me to heal it," she said. The fairy smiled her sharp smile. "That is the lesson. You will brew your own cure." She flew to the shelf and tapped a slim book. Loose pages slid out. "A healing potion. Follow the recipe exactly. One wrong step, and you drink poison instead." Kamare read the page aloud, slow and careful this time. The recipe called for a crystal sprout and a glowing vine. The fairy led her outside. Near the crooked door grew a trailing plant with pale petals that glowed soft in the morning gray. Kamare cut three flowers with her good hand. "The crystal now," the fairy said. Back inside, a small crystal sprout jutted from a cracked pot. Kamare snapped it free. It hummed against her palm. She crushed the petals in a bowl, then dropped the crystal in. The recipe said stir seven times, no more. Her burned hand shook so hard she nearly lost count. She braced her wrist on the table and forced each turn slow. Seven. She stopped. The mixture glowed the same soft color as the petals. Kamare's stomach knotted. One wrong step meant poison. She had counted right. She lifted the bowl and drank. The liquid was cool and tasted of rain. Warmth spread down her arm. The throbbing eased. She unwrapped the bandage with shaking fingers and stared. The welt was gone. New skin, smooth and dark, covered her wrist. She spread her fingers wide. They held steady. "I did it," Kamare whispered. She made a fist, then opened it. No shake. No pain. The fairy landed on the bowl's rim. "You did. Now your hand can hold a spell." Her ancient eyes narrowed. "But healing is the easy art. The next lesson bites back." She flew to the shelf and returned dragging a pendant by its silver chain. A faceted crystal swung from it, glowing deep. She dropped it into Kamare's healed hand. "Wear this. It drinks a misfired spell before the spell drinks you. You will need it." Kamare closed her steady fingers around the pendant. She had wanted power, and here was the first door open. But the fairy's warning hung in the quiet hut. The healing had been the gentle test. Whatever came next would try to burn her again, and this time no bandage would be the cure. She fastened the chain around her neck. "Teach me the next one," she said.
