Chapter 3

Kate stood inside the quiet with the sealed jar against her ribs. The pale woman did not move. Her long hair drifted as if the wind still touched her alone. Kate's list of questions was for the ghost at the peak, not for this. She had no plan for a thing that stood between her and the path down. Speaking first felt like stepping on ice she could not see through. She watched the woman's face for a long count. The face did not shift. No breath. No blink. Kate remembered what Mr. Echo had said at the base, that sound went missing here, that silence was the shape of the danger. The woman stood in the center of that silence like she owned it. Kate did not say hello. She did not say her brother's name. She kept her mouth shut and her hand tight on the jar. Instead she reached slow into her coat pocket and closed her fingers on the salt. She thought of Marrow down the slope, waiting, saying climbers do not return unchanged. She thought of the brass needle in Mr. Echo's box, twitching at every scrap of sound. Salt on stone made noise. Noise was the one thing this place ate. If the woman was the mouth, then noise was what she could not swallow cleanly. Kate took a step sideways, toward the lip of the gap. The woman's head turned with her. Kate stopped. She lifted the salt pouch and let a thin line pour onto the flat rock at her feet. The grains hit stone with a dry hiss. The sound was small, but inside that dead air it carried. The pale woman's hair stopped drifting. Her mouth opened a finger's width, then closed. Kate poured a second line across the path between them. She kept her eyes on the woman's hands, not her face. The hiss of salt landed like little pins. The woman took one step back, then another. The quiet around Kate loosened. She heard her own boots creak. She heard the coat move against her arm. She did not speak. She did not name the woman or ask what she was. She only poured. The woman did not vanish. She stepped off the path, onto the bare crown of the hill, and stood there watching. The way down was open. Kate walked through the salt line with the jar held tight, past the place the woman had blocked, and onto the slope. She did not look back until she was three switchbacks down and the wind had returned to her face. When she looked, the peak was empty against the gray sky. Marrow was waiting at the narrow bend. Mr. Echo climbed up from lower with the box in both hands. His needle was jumping. Kate held out the sealed jar. Her hand was shaking. She had brought it down. She had not spoken to the woman, and the woman had let her pass, and now the woman knew her face.
