The second placard climbed higher than the first, and a steel frame rose with it behind the stage. Frost crusted every joint of the tower that held it. The new sign demanded sound, weight, a real answer — not another shadow on cloth. Kawaii Princess stepped back through the blue curtains and saw her pavilion for what it was: bare boards, a silent bell, an empty prop shelf. She walked the stage looking for anything left to lift. The canvas tent at the rear flapped open on its posts, its panels torn, snow heaped inside where her trunks used to sit. Nothing. No ribbon, no horn, no chime. Only a frost-caked iron anvil squatting at the tent's mouth, too heavy to drag, left behind by some old stagehand. She set her palm on the cold iron. She could not lift it. She could not sing over it. The placard above creaked on its frame, waiting. Kawaii Princess stepped away from the anvil, walked to the front of the slab, and stood empty-handed under the sign. She gave the crowd nothing — no shadow, no gesture, no prop. Just herself, bare as the stage. The head scout waited. The crowd waited. Then he lowered the crown token to the slab's edge and did not release it. The placard stayed lit. Round unanswered. For the first time in the contest, she had tried and produced nothing at all — and the tower held its demand over her, still unmet, carrying into the next bell.
