Chapter 1

Keisha crouched on the wooden crate and counted six strangers below her, and one of them wanted her dead. The city called them all fugitives. She called them people worth saving. For two months she had climbed the forgotten rooftops of Hope, hauling food and water in a sturdy carry crate, building a refuge above the cameras that watched every street. Tonight six citizens waited by the ladder, hands raised, begging for a place to hide. But the enforcers paid well for names. One wrong choice would burn everything she had built. She dropped down and faced them. A man clutched a torn coat. A woman held a sleeping child. An old baker wept. They all told the same desperate story. Keisha could not read their hearts by looking. So she reached under her collar and drew out the amulet. The amulet was old, its green stone swirling like trapped smoke, its gold rim carved with runes she could not name. A hunted scholar had given it to her before the enforcers took him. He swore it darkened near a lie. She had never trusted it enough to bet lives on it. Now she had no choice. "Hold this," Keisha said. "Tell me why you came." One by one they gripped the stone. The man with the coat spoke, and the green swirl stayed bright. The mother spoke, and the light held steady. The baker's hands shook, but the stone glowed clean. Keisha felt hope rising. Maybe every one of them was true. Then the last man took it. He was young, calm, too calm. He said he had fled a factory raid. The stone dimmed. The swirl went dark, like ink poured into water. His face did not change, but his eyes flicked to the ladder behind him. "You're lying," Keisha said. He smiled and dropped the amulet. "They already know you're up here," he said. "I just had to confirm which building." He bolted for the ladder. Keisha shot a line of webbing from her wrist and yanked his ankle. He crashed hard. But a shrill whistle had already left his lips, and far below, boots answered on the street. Keisha pinned the informer and turned to the five real refugees. "Move," she ordered. "Now." She pointed them toward the next rooftop, toward the cabin she had hidden among the water tanks. The mother ran with her child. The baker stumbled after. Keisha snatched the fallen amulet and looped it back around her neck. She had found her test. It worked. But the informer had already spent it. Flashlights swept the wall below, climbing fast. Her secret refuge was secret no longer, and the enforcers knew exactly which rooftops to search.
