Chapter 8

Keith knelt against the altar, the ring hot in his fist. The three tangled syllables scraped inside his skull. The trace burned strong, too strong. Under his palm, the gold's warmth kept climbing. It did not settle. The metal shook, and the light in it flickered like a candle in wind. He knew the old ground had given more than he could hold. "Something's wrong," he said aloud. The rose field glowed pink around him, quiet and empty. He pressed the ring to his chest and reached for the door behind his eyes. It buckled. The trace pulsed once, then thinned, threatening to snap. If it broke now, the name would seal forever. A silver owl dropped from the dark and landed on the altar's edge. Its mirror wings scattered the pink light. Keith had followed this bird before, always toward help. Behind it stepped Lysandra, staff first, her white eyes fixed on nothing. The blind oracle had guided him from the start. Her calm steadied him now. "You pulled too hard," she said. "The altar poured its whole gift into the ring. The trace is unstable. It will burn out and take the door with it." "Then how do I hold it?" Keith's hand trembled around the hot metal. "You cannot hold it by force." She knelt across the altar from him. "You grabbed for the name. That is why it frays. Let the syllables go. Stop reaching. Give the trace something quiet to rest in." Keith's jaw tightened. He had bled for those three sounds. Releasing them felt like dropping them into deep water. But the ring shuddered harder, and he saw she was right. He loosened his grip on the memory. He stopped clawing at the door. He thought instead of the wanting itself. Not the name. Just the ache of the empty years. He held that steady, plain, without grabbing. The ring's shaking slowed. The wild heat sank back into an even glow. The three syllables dimmed and settled, still tangled, but no longer tearing at him. "There," Lysandra said. "The trace is anchored. It will hold now." Keith opened his fist. The ring lay warm and steady. He breathed out. "But the syllables are still knotted. I can't tell them apart." "No." She rose, leaning on her staff. "You saved the door. You did not clear the name. Three sounds sit jammed together in your grief. Forcing them nearly cost you everything." She turned toward the arch. "To untangle them, you must go back into the worst of it, slowly, one wound at a time. The field cannot do that work. Only you can." Keith looked at the tangled voice inside his head. He had a stable trace now, and a knot he could not read. The next step led inward, into pain he had spent years hiding from. He closed his hand around the ring and stood.
