Chapter 7

The hidden paths let them out at dawn. Kestral led Waylon and Einod through a narrow cleft in the rock. Runes glowed along a stone archway thick with moss. Crystals jutted from the sides like teeth. Behind them, the crown's torches patrolled the sealed lowlands. Ahead lay the only door the soldiers did not know. Kestral pushed through the glowing arch. The cave swallowed them whole. Inside, the air was cool and still. Towering crystals threw blue light across wet stone. At the center stood a basin of glowing water, white flowers floating on its surface. An old owl waited beside it. His feathers were gray and fraying. His beak was cracked. He did not look at the two hunters. He watched Kestral, and only Kestral, the way she watched her own patrons. "You came the hidden way," the owl said. "No stranger finds it. You did." "My road ran out," Kestral said. "I need these two kept safe." "I am Sikori. I have hidden this cave four hundred and twelve years." He stepped closer. "I trained no one. The paths fray with me. When I die, they open. The crown walks in." Einod set a hand on his sabre. Waylon said nothing, blue eyes scanning the runes. Kestral read the owl the way she read arrivals. He was not offering shelter. He was measuring her. "You watch people when they think no one looks," Sikori said. "So do I. My mother taught me. I have watched you since the arch. You keep what you hold. You do not break." Kestral kept still. Flattery was a warning. But this was not flattery. It was a test, and she had already passed the first part by arriving at all. "Put your hand in the water," Sikori said. She did. The pool was cold. Light climbed her arm. The runes on the arch behind her flared brighter, then settled. "The pool powers the runes," Sikori said. "Let it run dry and the cave shows itself. Feed it, and no one finds you. I am too old to feed it alone. You will learn." He showed her how to cup the water and pour it back, how to wake the runes with her touch. Her hands learned fast. The glow answered her, not him. By the time the flowers settled on the surface again, the cave obeyed her. "The role is yours now," Sikori said. "Grand Keeper. You hold the one road the crown cannot buy. Kings will come. Thieves will come. They come to the Keeper for what no one else can hide." Kestral looked at the water, then at the two hunters she had led here. She had wanted to pay off a tavern. Now she held a cave the crown could not reach. But Sikori was fading. The runes answered her hand, not his. If she left, the paths fell. She was Keeper now, and a Keeper could not leave.
