Chapter 1

Khayos wanted to break the world, but the world would not hold still long enough to break. They were a swirling orb of black and hot pink, and they hung in a room that already screamed. Purple pumpkins glowed on the floor. A blacklight panel buzzed against the wall. A psychedelic cat drifted past, jellyfish tendrils trailing behind it. Khayos flicked a claw of chaos at the room and twisted. Nothing changed. The pumpkins still glittered. The cat still drifted. The buzz stayed a buzz. That was the itch that never quit. Khayos loved to shatter stillness, but there was no stillness here. Everything already writhed. Their own chaos poured out and vanished into the noise, like pink dye dropped in a pink ocean. Twist after twist, and the world stayed the same. "Enough," Khayos said. They flung both hands wide and unleashed everything at once. The room shuddered. The cat spun. The pumpkins rolled. The blacklight flickered. Then it all settled back, exactly as before. Khayos hovered in the wreckage of their own effort and felt, for the first time, small. They drifted to the far wall. A portrait hung there, quiet. A horned cosmic goat, painted in careful lines and glowing shapes. Its heart burned steady in its chest. Beside it stood a strange bloom, folded in still layers, a soft light at its center. Neither one screamed. Neither one moved. Khayos stopped. The goat's painted eyes held still. Its heart did not flicker. The bloom's light did not waver. Two calm things in a room full of noise. Khayos understood. Their chaos got lost because it matched everything. To twist the world, they needed a still thing first. Something that did not move, so their movement would show against it. They reached for the goat's steady heart and pressed one claw of chaos into it. This time they did not fling. They held. They pushed against the stillness, slow, feeling it resist. The heart's glow shivered under their touch. The painted lines began to crawl. The goat's eyes turned. Its heart pulsed to a beat that Khayos set. The calm bloom beside it opened one layer, then another, blooming to Khayos's rhythm alone. A line ran out from that changed corner. The pumpkins cracked in the pattern Khayos chose. The cat froze mid-drift, obeying. The blacklight died where Khayos wanted dark. For the first time, the room bent to them and stayed bent. Khayos laughed, sharp and bright. The itch eased. They had found the trick. Not more chaos, but a still anchor to twist against. But the changed goat kept moving after Khayos let go. Its heart beat faster now, on its own. The line spread past the corner, past the wall, past the room. Khayos had started something that no longer needed them. And it was still spreading.
