Chapter 1
Kieran had spent months watching Rose from the edges of her life, learning the shape of her laugh without ever being its cause. He told himself it was safer this way — for her, mostly, but also for him. Dark elves carried their reputations like scars, and his red eyes had taught him early that people decided who he was before he opened his mouth. Rose had never said a word against him, never flinched or turned away, but her silence felt like a sentence he kept reading in his own handwriting. He loved her. He knew that much. What he didn't know was whether stepping forward would prove him right about everything he feared.
But today the choice wasn't his to delay. Rose stood trapped against the western wall of the obsidian fortress, its gothic spires casting shadows that made the crowd look like something out of a nightmare. Six men had cornered her there, their voices sharp with accusations Kieran couldn't quite hear from where he stood. Her basket lay overturned at her feet, apples rolling across the cobblestones. She wasn't screaming. She was doing what she always did — staying calm, trying to reason. It wasn't working. One of the men stepped closer. Kieran's hands went cold. He could walk away. He could let someone else handle it. But his feet were already moving, carrying him out of the shadows and into the light where everyone could see exactly what he was. Rose looked up as he approached, and for the first time in months, her eyes met his directly.
The fountain behind him caught the light as he stepped past it, its dark mist flowing over black stone. Kieran pushed through the crowd without speaking. The men turned. Their faces shifted when they saw his eyes. Fear, then anger, then something worse. One reached for a knife. Kieran didn't stop. He put himself between Rose and the blade, his back to her, his voice steady. "She's done nothing wrong. Leave her alone." The words felt strange in his mouth. He'd spent so long imagining her rejection that he'd forgotten what it felt like to simply choose her. The men hesitated. Kieran didn't. He took Rose's hand and pulled her away from the wall. She didn't pull back. She held on. And as they walked past the fountain together, the crowd parting around them, Kieran felt the weight of his fear crack and fall away like old armor he no longer needed.
They stopped at the base of the fountain, both breathing hard. Rose's fingers were still wrapped around his. She looked at their joined hands, then at his face. "Thank you," she said. Her voice was quiet but clear. Kieran wanted to say something back, something that would explain everything he'd been too afraid to tell her. Instead he reached into his coat and pulled out the bouquet he'd been carrying all morning. Dark purple blooms, half-wilted, the kind of flowers most people threw away. He'd kept them because they reminded him of himself — beautiful in a way that made others uncomfortable. He held them out to her. Rose took them without hesitation, her fingers brushing his. She smiled. Not the polite smile she gave everyone, but something real. Something meant only for him. And for the first time, Kieran stopped filling in her silence with his fears.
