Chapter 11

Kiersten walked home from the keep with the brazier's smoke still in her hair. The severed demon was gone, but the seam in her chest had not closed. Witness sat steady under her collarbone, and the light around that steadiness leaked outward like lamp glow through a cracked shutter. She felt it as a low hum in her jaw. Any hunter close enough would feel it too. She turned around before she reached the green shutters and walked back up the hill. They were already gathering in the courtyard of the keep when she arrived. Quantum stood by the vine staircase with his notebook open. Ananda Luminae knelt beside a small crystal set in a bowl of salt. Mother Angel waited near the scroll monument, hands folded. Aldric Sunweaver stood at the far wall, his tall blue hat casting a long shadow. Fortune padded a slow circle around Kiersten's boots, wheel-face turning. "You are broadcasting, child," Mother Angel said kindly. "The doors in your skin stand open. Witness is home, but the thresholds have no curtains." "A lit house with no walls," Ananda said. "Cute for a party. Bad for a siege." Aldric stepped forward. "Crystal fire can hold a signal quiet. I have done it before, for a healer in the grove. But your doors are many. One flame will not cover them." "Then we set one at each door," Quantum said. He touched Kiersten's wrist, her sternum, the knot at her shoulder, the key at her nape. "Four thresholds. Four small fires. Bound to her, not to the room." Fortune stopped circling. "Shield the light. Do not smother it. Witness must still breathe." They placed Kiersten in the center of the courtyard. Ananda lit the first crystal at her wrist. Aldric struck the second at her sternum and spoke a word Kiersten did not catch. Quantum lit the third at her shoulder. Mother Angel touched the fourth to Kiersten's nape and prayed over it in her steady, singing voice, asking for cover, for quiet, for a girl who had earned rest. The hum in Kiersten's jaw dropped. She felt the light under her collarbone gather inward, no dimmer, only closer. The seam in her chest sealed. Witness pressed once against the inside of her ribs, satisfied. "Try it," Aldric said. Kiersten opened her hand and let Witness rise a little into her palm. The glow warmed her skin but did not spill past it. Fortune sniffed the air and sat. "Nothing carries," Fortune said. "The doors are covered." Mother Angel lowered her hands. Her face did not soften. "The shields will hold as long as the fires do. Feed them or they die. And, child—covered is not gone. Whatever heard you before knows the shape of where the sound stopped." Kiersten nodded. She looked at the four small flames burning against her skin and understood she had bought quiet, not safety.
