Chapter 13

Kiersten woke with the four crystal fires still warm against her skin. Witness sat quiet in her chest. The demon was gone. The door to Eduardo was shut. For the first time in months, nothing pulled at her. She sat up, pulled on a clean shirt, and walked out into the morning. Her teachers were waiting for her at the school on the hill. The Mystic Energy School stood at the end of a vine-covered path. Stained windows showed painted galaxies and spirals. Kiersten climbed the stone steps and pushed the doors open. Quantum stood at a long wooden table, sleeves pushed to his elbows. His white hair caught the window light. Ananda Luminae sat cross-legged on the floor, laying out clear stones in a ring. Mother Angel stood at the far window, wings folded. Fortune padded across the boards and sat at Kiersten's feet. "You are on time," Quantum said. He did not smile, but his shoulders eased when he saw her. "Sit. We start where you actually are, not where you were." Kiersten sat inside Ananda's ring of stones. Ananda winked at her. "Fresh quartz. Nothing haunted. I checked." "Close your eyes," Quantum said. "Find Witness. Do not call. Only listen." Kiersten closed her eyes. She felt the seam under her collarbone. Witness pressed back, steady. No pulling. No leaking. Just presence, the way her own hand was present when she flexed it. "Good," Quantum said. "Now name the frequency of what you carry. Not the story. The feeling underneath." Kiersten thought about it. Old answers rose first, grief, guilt, fear. She let them pass. What sat under them now was quieter. "Steady," she said. "I feel steady." Mother Angel spoke from the window. "That is the ground you build on, child. Everything the hunter throws at you will try to knock you off it." Fortune's wheel turned once. "You have been a student who cannot hear the teacher. Today you can hear. That is the whole first lesson." Quantum set a small notebook in front of her. Three numbers were written on the first page in his hand: 3, 6, 9. "Energy moves in patterns," he said. "You will learn them the way I learned them. Slowly. On nights you cannot sleep. I will not rush you and I will not lose you." Kiersten touched the page. Her tattoos did not itch. Nothing yanked at her ribs. She was in the room with her teachers, only that. "What do I do first?" she asked. "Breathe with the ring," Ananda said. "In four, hold four, out four. We build your floor before we build your walls." Kiersten breathed. The stones around her hummed faintly. Witness hummed back. For the first time, the lesson landed inside her and stayed. Outside, far down the valley, something turned its head toward the hill and began to walk.
