Chapter 3

The morning after Eduardo's truck pulled away, Kiersten walked into town looking for company. The single syllable behind her eyes had not come back. Her tattoos hummed under her sleeves like sealed doors she had never learned to open. She needed a hand that was not her own. She found her friends at the feast hall table. The singer set her pawn-shop microphone beside the bread. The angel mother poured tea with slow, careful hands. Kiersten sat down and tried to say she was fine. Her mouth would not hold the lie. "I keep grieving a life that was never real," she said. "The children. The husband he was going to be. I built all of it in my head and called it a future." The angel mother covered Kiersten's hand. "You loved what you hoped for. That grief is honest." "I wanted him to find God because I was finding God," Kiersten said. "I thought if he loved me he would fight for it. He wanted the door open without doing the work." The singer lifted her microphone but did not turn it on. "Sometimes the song is for the person who won't sing it back. You still have to let it out." Kiersten's throat closed. The grief pressed against the tattoo above her heart. She felt the spirit stir behind her eyes and stall, blocked again by the seal. The angel mother studied her. "Your skin is locked. I can feel it from here. There is a teacher across the square who reads locks like yours. Go now, while the grief is moving. Locked doors open easier when something inside is pushing out." Kiersten crossed to the vine-covered school of stone and wood. Quantum met her at the door in a dark robe stitched with small constellations. His glasses caught the light. He did not ask why she had come. "You carry a key you have never turned," he said. "Show me your wrist." She pushed her sleeve back. He set two fingers on the smallest mark, a coil near her pulse. "This one is grief you agreed to carry that wasn't yours," he said. "Name it out loud. The lock only answers its own name." Kiersten's mouth shook. "The life I thought I was going to have with him. The children. The husband. I want to stop guarding it." The coil on her wrist warmed. A thin line of light traced its edge and broke. Heat climbed her arm. Behind her eyes, the spirit's voice came through clean for the first time, low and steady, one full sentence she heard end to end. You are allowed to want. Kiersten pressed her hand to the open mark. One lock, out of many. But the channel was open now, and the spirit was already speaking into it. Quantum stepped back and let her stand there alone with the voice she had waited her whole life to hear.
