Chapter 31

Noble crossed the flat stone and stopped a pace from her. He looked at the empty ridge, then at Kiersten. "It's done," he said. "You can go home." Kiersten sheathed the blue sword. The pendant at her throat cooled against her skin. She thought she would feel triumph. She felt tired, and clean. "Thank you," she said. "For the door. For the books. For not lying to me." Noble nodded once. He did not walk her out. He opened the guardian's door for her and stepped back inside. The hidden bunker sealed behind him with a soft click. She walked the wood alone. Witness sat quiet under her ribs, warm, awake. By the time she reached the vine-wrapped keep with its stained-glass angels, the sun had climbed over the roof. Her teachers were waiting on the steps. Mother Angel reached her first and put both hands on her cheeks. "There you are," she said. Her voice moved like a song. "There you are." Ananda knocked their knuckles gently against the pendant. "Told you the stone remembers. Even when you forget. Especially when you forget." Quantum did not touch her. He watched her eyes. "Sit," he said. "Tell us what you learned." They sat on the wooden steps under the moon carvings. Kiersten held her hands in her lap. She looked at each of them in turn. "I learned I was allowed to want," she said. "That was the first door. Then I learned I could name what I wanted out loud. Then I learned I could stand for what I named, even when someone I loved asked me not to." Mother Angel's eyes filled but did not spill. "I thought becoming a vessel meant I would disappear into the spirit," Kiersten said. "It didn't. She stayed her. I stayed me. We just stopped pulling in different directions." "That is the lesson," Quantum said. "Union is not erasure. It is agreement." Ananda grinned. "Also, crystals help. I will die on that hill." Kiersten laughed. It surprised her. "What did you take from it?" she asked them. "You all carried me. What did you get?" Quantum was quiet a moment. "I reached someone," he said. "That is not a small thing for me." Mother Angel smiled. "I got to watch a woman choose herself. That is the miracle I was sent for." Ananda shrugged. "I got a new student who actually listens. Do you know how rare that is." Kiersten looked down the path toward the town. The feast hall smoke rose in a thin line above the trees. Children's voices came up from the square. "I can go back," she said. It was not a question. "You can," Mother Angel said. "You are not a danger. You are a keeper." Kiersten stood. Witness stood with her. She started down the path toward home.
