Chapter 6

The morning after the naming, Kiersten walked back to the carved wood keep at the edge of the meadow. Vines shimmered along its walls. Gold moons hung above the door. She had a name for the spirit now, but a name was not a yes. Witness hummed behind her eyes and waited. She stepped through the door under the stained glass angels and sat on the mat inside. The chakra healer was polishing a purple stone with the hem of one sleeve. She looked up and winked with one violet eye. "Back so soon. Your heart stone is doing that shouty thing again. Ten out of ten. Very needy crystal." "I named it," Kiersten said. "I still don't know what I want." "Then you can't sign the contract," the healer said. "A vessel has to pour something. Empty jars just echo." The tarot-card creature padded in from the side room, wheel spinning slow on its face. Fortune sat at her knee. "You came for permission," Fortune said. "I don't sell that either. Say one true want out loud. The spirit needs somewhere to land." Kiersten opened her mouth. Nothing came. She had spent years learning to not-want. She tried the easy answer first. "I want Eduardo to heal. To come back the right way." Fortune's face turned. The card stilled on a figure standing at a crossroads, back to the viewer. "That's a want for him. Try again." The door opened. Quantum stepped in, blue robe stitched with small constellations, glasses catching the moonlight from the windows. Kiersten had gone to him once before, when he unlocked the coil on her wrist. He set a hand on her shoulder and did not speak yet. Then the second door opened. Mother Angel came through, curls bright, wings folded small. She knelt in front of Kiersten and took both her hands. "Sweet girl," she said. "Not what he needs. Not what the town needs. What do you want." Kiersten's throat closed. Quantum crouched beside her. "The town is inside you," he said. "Every roof. Every path. Every person. You are asking a country to speak with one mouth. Pick the smallest true thing." She closed her eyes. She listened past Eduardo. Past the porch. Past the ex-house. A small, plain sentence rose up, one she had never said. "I want to be taught," she said. "I don't want to guide anyone yet. I want someone to teach me what I am for." The tattoo above her heart went hot. Witness moved forward inside her chest, quiet and sure, and settled. Not fully bound. But rooted. Mother Angel squeezed her hands. "That we can hold." Quantum nodded once. "Then you start as a student. Not a vessel. Not yet." Fortune's wheel clicked to a new card and stopped. Fortune did not name it. "Come back tomorrow," Fortune said. "Bring the want with you. Don't lose it on the walk home." Kiersten stood. For the first time, she knew the next step was hers to take.
