Chapter 8

Kiersten walked home from the keep with three open doors humming under her skin. Witness was rooted, but rooted things needed still ground to spread. Her rented room above the feast hall was thin-walled and busy. Every laugh from downstairs pulled at her collarbone. She needed a place of her own to practice being a vessel. Without one, Witness could not deepen. Fortune had told her to find quiet before nightfall. Kiersten walked the lane past two houses that were not hers. One was a battered place with a sagging roof, cracked walls, and boarded windows. She knew it too well. It looked like the shape her old life had taken after she left Eduardo. She kept walking. Further down, a Renaissance stone house stood with green shutters and a small iron balcony. A caretaker sat on the step. Kiersten asked about the empty upper room. The caretaker named a price she could meet with a month of feast-hall wages. Kiersten paid. The key was warm in her palm. She slept there that first night on a bare mattress. Witness sank into the quiet like water into cloth. Then the dream came. Eduardo stood in a field she did not recognize. His cap was off. His hands hung open at his sides. In the waking world he could not say these things. In the dream his mouth moved and the true words came out. "I saw you clearer than I could stand. You looked at me and I knew you already saw the ending. That is why I got loud. I wanted to be the one who left first." He looked at his boots. "I did not know what to do with a woman who did not need fixing." Kiersten did not step closer. Behind Eduardo, a dark shape crouched at his shoulder, low and patient. It had been there a long time. He had not turned to look at it yet. Mother Angel stood at the edge of the field in her white dress, curls bright. She did not speak to Eduardo. She spoke to Kiersten. "You can hear him. You do not have to answer. The thing behind him is not yours to carry." She lifted one hand and a soft wall of light settled between Kiersten and the crouching shape. "Your door is open. I am the sill." Kiersten listened until Eduardo finished. She did not reach for him. She said, "I hear you. I am still not coming back." The field thinned. She woke in the stone house at dawn. The rooms were quiet. Witness spread wider through her, steady now, held by walls that were hers. Under her collarbone, the gold line pulsed once, softer. On the sill of the open window, a small dark feather lay where no bird had been. She picked it up. It was warm. Something had tried the door in the night, and the door had held.
