Chapter 2

The morning after the orchard, the palace went still. No new letter came from the rival court. The lord's seal held. For the first time in weeks, King Sammy had nothing to fix. He sat alone at the long table while his children slept. The quiet felt strange, almost heavy. He had spent his whole life showing up for others. He had never once sat down and asked what he wanted for himself. A knock came at the great doors. A servant led in a woman in a sky-blue gown with a golden belt. She moved like she owned the floor. Sammy did not know her. She had married into a neighboring royal house, and she had asked to visit the king who kept thirty-one children. "King Sammy," she said. "I am Elara Whitmore. How charming. A palace full of orphans and no one to share the crown." Her smile was polite. Her eyes were not. "I heard you might be looking for a partner." Sammy stood. He was not used to being read so fast. "I've been told that before," he said carefully. "It usually doesn't end well." "No?" She circled the table. "Let me guess. They see the children, and they run." She stopped. "I don't run. I plan. I could give you a throne no rival court would dare touch. You could give me a family who calls me mother." Her voice dropped, sharp and clipped. "We would both get what we want." For one breath, Sammy wanted to say yes. She was strong. She was clever. She would never leave. That alone made her tempting. Then he looked closer. She had not asked a single child's name. She spoke of the crown, the court, the safety. Not the children. Not him. "You'd stay," Sammy said slowly. "But you'd want something in return." "Everyone wants something." Elara folded her hands. "I have four sisters who threw me away when I was six. I intend to make them watch me rise. Your kingdom would help me do that." She tilted her head. "And in exchange, you keep your family. Though thirty-one is quite enough, don't you think? We needn't add more." There it was. His one line. The thing he could not trade. "I go out every winter," Sammy said. "I bring home the ones nobody wants. I will never stop." Elara's polite mask slipped. "Then you'll always be alone with them." "Maybe," he said. "But I won't be alone with the wrong person." She studied him a long moment. Then she gathered her skirts. "A pity. You'd have made a useful ally." She left without another word. Sammy sat back down in the quiet. His hands were shaking, but not with regret. He had used the rare moment. He had answered the question the room had asked him. He wanted a true partner, not a shield. Now he knew the difference, and he knew he could still say no.
