Chapter 4

Miracle had spent three days in the palace, and every hour of it was easy. Sammy watched her charm the children through games and songs. But easy was not the test. He needed to see her through a hard hour, not a bright one. So he made a plan. That night, one of his youngest woke sick with fever and would not stop crying. Sammy did not go to her. He knocked on Miracle's door instead. "The baby's ill," he said. "I have to help the others prepare for the morning frost. Can you sit with her?" Miracle blinked. The mischief drained from her face. "Alone?" "Alone," Sammy said. He handed her a warm cloth and left before she could argue. Then he stopped around the corner and listened. This was the honest test he had lacked. He would not trust his children to someone who fled the ugly moments. For a long while he heard only the child screaming. Miracle's voice came thin and unsure. "Please stop. Please. I don't know what you want." A chair scraped. Sammy's chest tightened. He was certain she would open the door and call for him. She did not. The crying went on. Sammy pictured the pink gown, the clapping hands, and doubted them. Then something changed. Miracle began to hum. It was clumsy, off-key, a pop tune stretched slow. The child hiccupped. The humming grew steadier. Sammy heard a wooden rocking chair start to creak, back and forth, back and forth. "I never had anyone rock me," Miracle whispered through the door. "So I'm bad at it. But I'll keep going till I'm good." The screaming softened to whimpers, then to nothing. The rocking chair creaked on. Sammy stood in the cold hall and did not move. He had built the test to catch her failing. Instead she had stayed. He eased the door open at dawn. The child slept against Miracle's chest. Miracle's eyes were red and open. Her hair had come loose, emeralds slipping from the tangles. She looked up, and there was no performance left in her. "She stopped breathing funny around two," Miracle said. "I got scared. I almost woke you." She swallowed. "But you needed to know I wouldn't." Sammy realized she had understood the test all along. He knelt by the rocking chair. "I set that up," he admitted. "To see if you'd run." "I know," Miracle said. She did not sound hurt. "I've been run out of every room I ever wanted. I wasn't going to do it to her." Sammy took the sleeping child from her arms. The test was over, and it had a clear answer. Miracle could hold the hard hours. His last doubt was gone. But as he watched her sag with exhaustion, a new weight settled on him. He had proven she could stay. Now he had to decide what he was willing to offer her in return, and whether his heart had caught up to his certainty.
