Kinkluz Deepclaw pressed his claws into the coral wall and watched the current shift. The water pulled left, then suddenly reversed. A gap opened in the reef face ahead, wider than any he'd mapped in this sector. Dark water rushed inward, dragging loose coral fragments and strips of kelp into the opening. He had seconds to decide. His life's work was mapping every cave system in these depths, but the debris flow was already slowing. The gap would close soon, and he'd never find it again. He pushed off and swam hard toward the opening. Something massive tumbled past him, pulled by the current. An enormous container made of titan husk fragments and bound debris wedged itself against the gap's mouth. The structure held firm, braced between coral ridges. Water still rushed through the spaces around it, but the container had stopped the passage from closing completely. Kinkluz slipped through a gap beside the ancient wreckage and into the cave. He had his entrance, and for once, the reef had given him a marker that might last. Inside, the chamber stretched deeper than his lights could reach. The walls were smooth, carved by centuries of water flow. He pulled out his chart board and began marking the entrance coordinates. The wedged container would make this cave findable again, something he could return to and finish mapping properly. He marked the titan husk formation on his rough sketch, adding detail he'd never had before. A permanent landmark in a shifting world. This cave would be the first one he could chart completely, start to finish, without the reef swallowing it back into darkness. But the current was already weakening. Water no longer pulled at his fins with the same force. He needed to mark this moment before the passage changed again. Kinkluz drew the blade from his mapping kit, a sword of crab bone with a blue soul gem at its center. He drove it into the cave floor near the entrance, the gem glowing faintly in the dark water. The light would guide him back, a beacon anchored in stone. He turned and swam deeper, his chart ready, finally mapping a cave that would still exist tomorrow.
