Kipril stood outside Aunlon's door, one hand already raised to knock. She had asked him to meet her at the nest, alone. The word alone had sat in his chest all morning like a second heartbeat. He could not tell if this meant friendship or something more, but he had said yes anyway, the way he always did. A floating creature with a single green eye bobbed near the entrance, its tendrils swaying in the breeze. It served as her doorbell, but Kipril had not touched it yet. Instead he shifted his weight and checked the wrapped thermal core in his lower left hand. He had bought it two days ago. The metal felt warm even through the cloth, its glow hidden but present. He had imagined handing it to her, watching her face change as she understood. But now, standing here, he could not picture the moment past that. What if she smiled and said thank you the way she did when he helped carry supplies? What if she set it aside and kept talking about someone else? The creature's eye swiveled toward him. Kipril reached out with his upper right hand and brushed its side. A soft chime rang out. He heard movement inside, then footsteps. The core grew heavier in his grip. He thought about tucking it into his satchel, keeping it hidden just a little longer. But Aunlon opened the door before he could decide, and her expression was unreadable. "Come in," she said, stepping back. Her nest rose behind her, visible through the wide arch of her home. It was larger than he remembered, layered with soft grasses and woven branches, the structure leaning slightly as if grown rather than built. She gestured toward it. "I need your opinion on something." Kipril followed her inside, the core still in his hand, and realized with a strange clarity that this was the moment he had been waiting for. Not perfect, not clear, but here.
