Chapter 1

Kogo Tanaka knelt in the mud and counted the sick. Three foxes, one owl, and the big brown bear in the green jacket. Kogo had come to this failing zoo to build a sanctuary, the best in the region. Instead he watched his rescues get worse every day. The pens were rotting. Rain leaked through the roofs. The wire sagged where rust had eaten it through. The bear coughed. He was the worst of them. He wore an oversized green jacket that someone had left on him years ago, and he refused to let Kogo take it off. Kogo checked his water and found it green with algae. "I know," Kogo said softly. "This place is killing you. I'm going to fix it." But he had no money and no clean pen to move them into. Every enclosure was the same wreck. He had walked the whole grounds twice looking for anything solid. Nothing. Then he remembered the old glasshouse behind the far fence. He had never gone inside. He grabbed bolt cutters and went. The structure was huge. The iron frame had gone orange with rust, and vines had swallowed half the glass. Many panes were smashed. But when Kogo forced the door and stepped in, he stopped. The frame still stood straight. The walls held. Under the broken panels, the space ran long and wide, big enough for all his animals and more. He walked the floor and tested the beams. Solid. The broken glass he could replace. The vines he could cut. The roof that had killed his pens here was mostly whole. For the first time in weeks, he had a real answer. Kogo worked until dark. He cleared the largest room, hauled out dead brush, and swept the floor clean. He patched the worst holes with boards. Then he carried the animals over one by one. The foxes went first, then the owl in a covered crate. The bear he coaxed on foot, slow, one paw at a time. By midnight all of them lay in dry straw under solid glass. No leaks. No rust. The foxes stopped shivering. The owl tucked its head and slept. Kogo sat against the wall, filthy and shaking, and let himself breathe. He had done it. He had a clean home for them at last. Then he noticed the plant. It grew in the corner where his light fell. A fern with red fronds, curled tight, glowing like a low coal. Warmth came off it. Kogo touched one leaf and pulled his hand back fast. The stem was hot. The dry straw sat inches away, and the whole glasshouse was full of it. He had moved his animals out of a dying zoo and into a building with a living fire growing inside its walls.
