Chapter 10

Kratos returned to his clifftop stronghold at dawn. Four siblings answered to him now. But the ground shook before he reached the gate. Cracks split the stone courtyard. Vines burst up through the tiles and coiled around the walls. His recruits scattered. The Greek flag his allies still flew snapped once and tore loose from its pole. The Titan-blooded elder rose from the broken earth. She wore rough Greek cloth, and roots trailed from her hands like veins. She had let Kratos build all of this on one law. Never move toward the prison. He had broken it. He had marched Zelus down to the shadow-crypt of iron doors and molten seams. "You brought a hot-blooded god to my son's cage," she said. Her voice was the grind of stone. "You swore you never would. Now your whole faction pays." The vines tightened on the walls. One stone cracked and fell. Bia stepped between the elder and the recruits. Nike moved beside her. Kratos raised his hand to hold them back. "I kept the deeper oath," Kratos said. "I brought Zelus only to look. Not to open. Ask Kronos himself." "Kronos speaks for no one," she said. "He is chained." "Then let him speak from his chains. In stone. As he did before." Kratos knelt and pressed his palm to the cracked earth. "You are the earth. Carry my words down. Carry his words up. If he says I moved toward the lock, tear this place apart. I will not fight you." The elder went still. The vines paused. She sank one hand into the ground. A long silence held. Kratos heard only the sea below and the drip of molten rock far under his feet. When the answer came, it rose through the stone in the Titan's plain voice. "He barred my son at the threshold. My son asked. Kratos refused. The boy came only to see the iron. I asked for no key. I want only my daughter's pardon." The elder pulled her hand from the soil. The vines loosened and slid back down the walls. She looked at Kratos a long moment. "You obeyed the letter and the spirit both," she said. "That is rare in a god." She let the cracks in the courtyard knit shut. "Your faction stands. But hear me. Your debt to my son grows. You lean on him now for every proof. One day he will lean back." She sank into the earth and was gone. Bia signed fast. *We nearly lost everything for Zelus.* "I know," Kratos said. Nike watched the healed ground. "You keep winning by asking a Titan to vouch for you. That is a rope, brother. And someone holds the other end." Kratos said nothing. His faction stood whole, all four siblings under his roof at last. But every proof he owned came from a chained god. And a chained god was still owed.
