Chapter 6

Three days after the banner came down, a runner reached the clifftop stronghold. He carried no message from Zeus. He carried a rune-marked bag, its cloth stitched with glowing marks, cinched by a golden cord. Bia took it from him and set it before Kratos on the stone table. She signed once. *From the prison.* Kratos knew the marks. They matched the token he had carried up from Kronos's cell. The Titan was calling. Kratos loosened the cord. Inside lay a single rune-carved disc, still warm, as if pulled from a fire. He turned it in his fingers. The old law of gods was plain. A debt taken must be paid, or the god who broke it broke his own word. Kratos had built his faction on his word. Every recruit knelt because his word held. He descended alone to Tartarus. The bronze archway loomed over cracked stone, red light bleeding from its base. Beyond it, iron doors stood in volcanic rock. Kratos passed through and found Kronos behind the bars, calm, hands folded. "You honored the token," Kronos said. "The elder stood down. Now I call the debt." He did not raise his voice. "I want no rescue. I told you that, and it is still true. My debt is this. Send word to my daughter Demeter. Tell her I am sorry for what I did to her before she drew breath. That is all." Kratos studied him. A message. Not a chain broken, not a door opened. "You could send a messenger." "They will not carry my words," Kronos said. "You gave your word. You will." Kratos felt the trap and the gift both. To carry the message was to serve a Titan, and Olympus would hear of it. To refuse was to break his own law, the same law he swore his enforcers to. He would not build a faction on a broken word. "I will carry it," Kratos said. "Once. The debt ends here." "It ends here," Kronos agreed. Kratos climbed back to the light. He found Demeter among her fields and spoke Kronos's words plainly. She went still. Her jaw tightened. She said nothing for a long moment. Then she nodded, and turned away, and did not thank him. The debt was paid. But word travels faster than any god. By the time Kratos returned to the cliff, Bia met him at the gate. She signed hard, her face set. *Hermes was here. He knows.* Kratos understood. The messenger of the gods had seen him leave Tartarus and speak with a daughter of Kronos. That story would reach Zeus before dawn. Kratos had kept his word and freed himself of the Titan. He had also handed Zeus a reason to doubt him. His enforcers answered to his word alone now. Soon the king would ask whose word that truly was.
