Chapter 1

Kuroba Asashin walked the desert for two days before he saw the shack. He was a black man in black cloth, an odachi strapped across his back, a mask covering his face below the eyes. He had killed the cult that raised him as a boy. He had left the monks who took him in after. Now he was thirty and wandering, looking for a place quiet enough to hide a dojo where he could teach the ones no one else would teach. The shack sat alone in the sand, its wood sun-bleached, jasmine climbing the walls. He tried the door. It opened. He stepped inside, set the odachi within reach, and slept on the floor. He woke to an arrow tip against his throat. A young woman with red hair stood over him, bow drawn, quiver on her back, a short blade at her hip. "This is my shelter," she said. "Hands where I can see." Kuroba kept his hands open on the floor. He did not reach for the odachi. He told her his name and that he would leave at first light. She did not lower the arrow. She asked why a man dressed like him slept in a place like this. He said he was looking for empty land. She laughed once, sharp. "Empty land gets people killed out here." She told him her name was Ona Barri. She said the men who ran the nearest town took girls who could not pay their fathers' debts. She said she had been running for a month. She kept the bow drawn while she spoke. Kuroba watched her shoulders. They were pulled high, locked, the posture of someone who had been made small young. He knew that shape. He had worn it himself. "You can shoot me," he said, "or you can eat." He moved slow. He pulled dried meat from his pack and set it on the floor between them. She lowered the bow an inch. Then another. She sat across from him and ate with the arrow still nocked. He asked what she planned to do when the men came looking. She said she did not know. He said he could teach her to stand in a way that did not invite them. Not tonight. Over time. She studied his mask. She studied the odachi he had not touched. "Why," she said. He told her about the person he had once guarded who could not pay. He told her he had watched something burn and had not stopped it, and that he would not do that again. In the morning she was still there. She asked where he was going. He said he did not know yet, but he was going to build something, and he could use a second pair of eyes. She picked up her bow and followed him out into the sand.
