Kuroba drew a long breath and the air in the hall pulled toward him. The gold panels on the walls rattled in their frames. He set his back foot and lowered the odachi. Behind him, Bobby dragged Jackie a step back from Kazrik, who leaned on his good arm and watched Kuroba. Rin’s eyes narrowed. He knew what was coming. Kuroba began to give off a pale blue light that climbed from the floor around his feet. Rin knew the shape of what came next. He had felt it in years ago from his master. Rin planted himself as he spoke to himself “Ah… the Chi Ascension”. Rin pulled out a katana, saying “This is no longer the man who entered my palace.” Kuroba dropped the odachi. He dropped his weight through his heels the way Kenji had drilled. He stopped guarding the wound in his side. He stopped guarding anything. He was healed. Everything in him was healed. He has reached a new state. The Chi Ascension.
