Chapter 1

Kyle Tindale held the envelope up to the porch bulb and read three words through the paper: PAYMENT AS AGREED. The letter was addressed to a state senator. The return corner was blank, but he knew the ink. He had seen that same tight typewriter bite on invoices Edith slipped him under the counter at the grocery. The problem was simple and it had kept him up for weeks. His mail route ended at the chain link fence behind the old pump house. The Chemex Works offices sat on the other side of that fence, and another postman carried their bag. Kyle could read half a scandal. He could not read the half that would make him the most trusted mouth in River City. He walked the fence line at dawn. The river ran black beside him, its surface rippling under a skin of something that caught the light wrong. A slick clung to the reeds. Kyle had grown up drinking from taps fed by that water. So had the Miller boys down his street. So had their grandmother, who now coughed through the wall at night loud enough to wake him. The chain gate was padlocked. Beyond it, the brick face of the factory rose four stories, CHEMEX CORPORATION painted white above the loading doors. A side door opened. Edith Crumm stepped out with a lunch pail and her silver glasses swinging on their chain. She saw him and her whole face lit up in a way that made him look at his shoes. "Kyle. You're early." "I can't get their mail," he said through the links. "Route's not mine. I've been trying for months." She glanced back at the loading doors. Then she stepped closer to the fence, quick, and her voice dropped. "I sign every invoice that leaves that building. Every one." "Edith—" "Come to the back window Thursday after six. I'll have copies." She said it fast, like she'd rehearsed. "Payments to three men in the statehouse. And one to the health inspector who cleared the outflow pipe." He gripped the wire. "Why?" She tilted her head. "Because you asked, Kyle. Nobody asks me anything." A whistle sounded inside the factory. She hurried off before he could answer. He walked back along the river. Gracie Jones was on her front step with a mug she wasn't drinking, thin under her red sweater, her glasses hanging forgotten on their gold chain. She lifted a hand to him. He lifted one back and kept walking so she wouldn't see his face. He had solved it. Thursday he would have the papers. He would have names. He would have the scandal. He would also have Edith on the wrong side of that fence, forging his access with her own signature, and a slick on the river that was already eating his neighbors from the inside. The gossip he had chased for months had just become something he could not tell as gossip.
