Chapter 47

Kylie called her mother back and got the deal moving. The label wanted the song out fast, so her mother agreed to a new release plan by noon. It was done. The song belonged to the world now. Kylie hung up and looked at Arianna across the kitchen. Everything they had made together had already passed through other hands. The letters were public. The song was public. Even the engagement ring had trended before they wanted it to. Kylie wanted one thing that was only theirs. She had nothing left the label hadn't touched. "I keep trying to give you a moment," Kylie said. "But they always get there first. The proposal. The song. All of it." She picked up the ring box from the counter. The red diamond sat in the gold band. "Even this got a headline before you finished asking me." Arianna took the box from her hands. "Then stop trying to make a new thing. Use the one thing they can't copy." She led Kylie down to the recording studio and shut the door. The acoustic panels killed every sound from outside. No phone reached them. No camera saw. "Sing it," Arianna said. "Not the finished version. Not the take we gave them. The parts we cut." Kylie understood. During the sessions they had thrown away lines that felt too private. Words about the letters. Words about the puppy learning Arianna's coat. The label had the polished song. They had never heard the scraps. Kylie sat at the mixing desk and pulled up an empty track. She set the microphone between them. "We record a version only we have," she said. "No copy leaves this room." Arianna sang first, her voice low and steady. Kylie layered her harmony on top the way she always had. They put the cut lines back in. Kylie sang about a year of envelopes on her floor. Arianna sang about a taxi ride with a scared dog. It was rough. A note cracked. Neither of them fixed it. When they finished, Kylie saved the file to a single drive and pulled it from the desk. One copy. In her hand. "This is the moment," Kylie said. She held out the ring box and the drive together. "The ring the world can see. This one they never will." She slid the ring onto Arianna's finger, then set the drive in her palm on top of it. "Yours. The only proof it happened this way." Arianna closed her fist around both. "Then we're the only ones who own it." Kylie's phone buzzed against the desk. Her mother again. The message read: Release is confirmed. Statement goes out tonight. The label wants you and Arianna both quoted. Kylie read it and did not feel the old panic. They could have the song. She had already given Arianna the thing that mattered. Now the label wanted their words, and this time both of them would have to answer.
