Chapter 5

Kylie got home near midnight. She slept badly and woke at six with a problem she had not solved. She had promised Arianna a real Friday at her real house. She had cleared the whole day. She had no plan for what they would actually do inside it. A blank day in a big house could feel worse than a letter that never got answered. She made coffee and stood at the kitchen island in the tour jacket she had grabbed off a chair, black fading down into red at the cuffs. She wrote a list on the back of a receipt. Movie. Cook something. Show her the studio. Every line looked like a date a stranger would plan. Arianna had waited a year. Arianna deserved better than a checklist. Her phone buzzed. A neighbor two houses down, a blonde girl about her age who dog-sat when Kylie toured, had sent a photo of a small orange cat curled on a porch cushion. "Yours?" the message said. Kylie had met her twice. She was the only person on the street who had never once asked for a picture or a song. She wrote back and asked if she could come over. The girl showed up in jeans and a faded red T-shirt, hair pulled back, holding the cat like it weighed nothing. She set it on the counter and looked at Kylie's list without being invited. "This is a schedule," she said. "Not a Friday." "I know." "What does she actually like?" Kylie stopped. She thought about the letters. The bus. The song Arianna had written before they ever met. The puppy on the blanket. "She likes writing. She likes being somewhere quiet with me. She likes the dog." "Then don't plan a day. Plan a room." The girl tapped the receipt. "Clear the living room. Put the piano where the couch is. Leave food out so nobody has to ask. Let the dogs in. Then stop." Kylie stared at her. "That's it?" "You already did the hard part. You gave her a key." The girl picked up the cat again. "Don't turn Friday into a show. She didn't write you for a show." After she left, Kylie moved the couch herself. She dragged the upright piano across the rug until it faced the window. She put a stack of blank paper on the bench and two pens beside it. She set a bowl of fruit on the low table and a folded blanket on the floor for the puppy. She stepped back. The room looked like an invitation, not an itinerary. She texted Arianna. "Car comes at ten. Bring the puppy. Bring anything you've been writing." The reply came in seconds. "Okay." Kylie sat on the piano bench. Friday had a shape now. Then her mother's name lit up the screen, and Kylie remembered she had not actually told her yet.
