Chapter 54

The week bought them silence. Now the island held them. Kara had flown Kylie and Arianna to the seaside house at dawn, then left to fetch the license. The dresses hung ready. The puppy slept in the shade. Two days remained before Saturday. Kylie stood at the pool's edge and realized she had nothing to say. Arianna had written her letters for a year. Kylie had a blank page. She went inside to find paper. Her kitten trailed her, tail up, batting at her heels. Kylie sat at the wide table and stared at the empty sheet. She tried a line. "I promise to love you." It sounded like a card from a store. She crossed it out. She tried another. It read like a song lyric she'd already sold. She crossed that out too. The kitten climbed into her lap and pressed a paw to the pen. Kylie almost called Arianna in to help. That was the old habit, hiding behind something they made together. This time the words had to be hers alone. She set the kitten down and made herself stop reaching for pretty lines. She thought of the plain, true things instead. She wrote what she remembered. The night she said the three words in the car, with no gift between them. The lock on Arianna's door that only Arianna could turn. The dog who knew Arianna's coat before her face. She stopped trying to sound grand. She wrote how she used to give objects because she was scared to speak. She wrote that Arianna had cured that. The kitten knocked the pen off the table. Kylie laughed and picked it up. The break loosened something. She wrote the last lines fast. "I will knock before I enter your room. I will decide with you, not for you. I will not go quiet when you need my voice." These were promises she had already broken once and fixed. That made them true. She read it back. It was not clever. It was accurate. Every line named a real thing that had happened between them. She folded the letter, tied it with a strip of ribbon, and pressed a seal of red wax at the fold. Her hands were steady now. Arianna knocked at the doorway, holding the sleeping puppy. "You've been in here an hour," she said. "What is that?" Kylie slid the sealed letter into the box beside the paired keepsake. "Your vows," she said. "You don't get to read them until Saturday." Arianna smiled and did not push. She trusted the answer. Kylie felt the difference in her chest. She had faced Arianna before with borrowed words and gifts. On Saturday she would stand there with her own. The blank page was gone. In its place sat a letter she could read aloud without flinching. Two days remained. Now she had something honest to say.
