Chapter 67

The guitar started. Kylie turned. Arianna stood at the altar in a red gown Kylie had never seen. The dress hugged her, sleek and dark against the white linens and the bright water behind her. The puppy sat calm at her feet. Kylie forgot the plan for a second. Then she found the first note and sang her verse alone, walking across the sand toward the woman she loved. She reached the altar. Arianna kept playing, her voice low under the strings, moving into the song they had written together. Dr. Carter stood to the side, the ring box in her hands. Kara held her place as officiant, silent, exactly as rehearsed. Everything Kylie had built for a week was working. The music carried them toward the vows. Then the panic hit. The vow letter sat sealed in the box near Dr. Carter. Kylie had written it weeks ago, in careful lines she practiced. But the words in that letter were old now. She had felt something at the gate, watching Arianna turn. That feeling wasn't on the page. The letter promised love and standing by. It did not say what walking toward Arianna had just shown her. Arianna reached the line where Kylie was meant to speak. The guitar softened. Kylie opened her mouth to recite the sealed words. She stopped. If she read the letter, she would give Arianna a rehearsed thing on the day that deserved the true one. She left the letter in the box. She looked straight at Arianna and spoke instead. "I wrote you a letter," Kylie said. "It's sealed over there. I'll give it to you after. But I can't read it now. It doesn't say this part." Arianna's hands went still on the strings. The beach was quiet except for the fountain and the water. "When you turned around just now," Kylie said, "I saw you in that dress, and I stopped being scared. For a year I hid behind gifts. I hid behind letters. I'm done hiding. I don't want to promise you words I practiced. I want to promise you me. I choose you. I'll keep choosing you every day, out loud, even when it's hard." Arianna's eyes filled. She did not lift the guitar again. "That's better than anything you sealed in a box," she said. Dr. Carter stepped forward with the ring at the exact beat they had rehearsed. Kylie took the band and slid it onto Arianna's finger. Kara spoke her two lines and named them married. Kylie kissed her wife. The letter still lay sealed on the bench, a keepsake now, not a script. She had said the truer thing herself. The wedding was done, but her mother and the label still believed the two of them were only resting on the island. The world outside had no idea Kylie Cantrall had just married the fan who wrote her.
