Chapter 76

The offer sat plain on the piano. Kylie read it twice and felt proud. But Arianna hadn't sat down. She stood by the tall front windows of the manor, arms crossed, staring at the driveway. Something in the room had shifted. The paper was good news. Arianna's face was not. "You did everything right," Kylie said. "You signed nothing. You brought it home." She waited. "So why do you look like that?" Arianna didn't answer. She pressed her palm flat against the glass. Kylie crossed the bright room and stood beside her. Whatever rattled her wife had happened inside that closed meeting, in a room Kylie couldn't enter. She had built her whole life on being present. Now she had to wait for Arianna to open the door. "Tell me what he said," Kylie said. "Not the offer. The thing that scared you." Arianna's jaw tightened. "One of them stayed after. When the others left with the paper." She turned from the window. "He said the offer didn't matter. He said we're two women who got lucky once. That the story fades. That in a year no one remembers the fan and the singer." Kylie kept still. "That's a pressure trick. I taught you those." "It wasn't a trick." Arianna's voice dropped low. "He wasn't selling. He believed it. He looked at me like I was already gone." She swallowed. "He said, enjoy it while it lasts." Kylie understood now. The offer was small and safe. The words were the weapon. The executive hadn't tried to make Arianna sign. He'd tried to make her doubt she belonged at all. "That's the fear you told me on the island," Kylie said. "That you'd always be the fan. The lucky one. And he found it." Arianna nodded once. Her eyes were wet. Kylie took her hand off the glass and held it. "Listen to me. He doesn't know us. He wasn't at the altar. He didn't hear you sing your verse." She squeezed. "A stranger who wants to shrink us doesn't get to decide what we are." "But what if he's right about the world?" Arianna said. "What if the story fades?" Kylie didn't rush the answer. She thought of the drive with only one physical copy of their marriage, the words no office held. "Then we make something the story can't fade around," she said. "Not a headline. A record they can't move up or twist." Arianna wiped her face. "What record?" "The private one. The version with the cut lyrics. The one only we have." Kylie turned toward the recording room. "He said enjoy it while it lasts. So we make something that lasts longer than him." Arianna's shoulders dropped. The fear had a shape now, and a shape could be answered. "Okay," she said. "Show me." Kylie led her wife down the hall. The offer stayed on the piano, unsigned. It had never been the real threat.
