Kyrie returned to her workshop and found the ornate dagger still sitting on her bench—the one she'd been adapting for the blade's pommel decoration before the early summons. She'd planned to strip the ruby inlays and rework them into her grip design, a final flourish that would set her blade apart. Now it sat untouched, a reminder of all the hours she'd lost. She picked it up, studied the intricate gothic patterns etched into the metal, then set it back down. Next year, she'd have those hours. She unwrapped her unfinished blade and placed it beside the dagger. The steel was sound, the design brilliant—the judges had said so themselves. But brilliant ideas didn't win competitions. Finished work did. Her rival had earned first place because he'd delivered a complete blade, not because he was better. Kyrie ran her thumb along the rough edge, feeling every imperfection she hadn't had time to fix. This was something smaller. A practice piece. Something she could finish in a week, start to end, with no shortcuts and no distractions. She'd lost four years trying to beat her rival with strategy.
