Chapter 1

Lacey had finally found the perfect spot. A weedy lot beside a quiet country road, the exact place to build her roadside cafe and craft shop. She'd sketched the counter, the shelves for her handmade jewelry, the little table where travelers would drink coffee. The shop would pay for her wandering life. Then the sky split open. The rain came fast and hard. Water rose over the road in minutes, brown and fast-moving. Lacey grabbed her notebook and jumped back, but the current already swallowed the low stretch she'd paced an hour before. Her car sat on the wrong side of the flood, hood-deep. Her tent, her pencils, her sample necklaces — all trapped in the back seat. She pressed her soaked notebook to her chest and looked for shelter. There was none. Only open field, a broken fence, and rain so thick she could barely see. Her sketches ran gray where the drops hit them. Two years of planning, dissolving in her hands. Headlights cut through the water. A battered truck slowed on the dry side of the flood and stopped. A young man leaned out, dark hair under a soaked baseball cap, brown eyes squinting at her through the downpour. "You can't cross that," he called. "It'll pull the car right off the road." "My whole life is in that car," Lacey shouted back. He studied the flood a moment. Then he cut the engine, pulled off his cap, and climbed out into the rain like it didn't matter. He waded to the edge of the water and crouched, reading the current the way some people read a map. "Truck sits higher," he said. "I'm Billy. I can pull your car out once the water drops. Won't be long — this kind comes and goes." "And until then?" He pointed down the road, past the curtain of rain. "Bakery. Half a mile. It's got a roof and coffee." Lacey hesitated. Her plans were bleeding through her fingers. But standing in a field wouldn't save them. She climbed into the truck, dripping onto the seat, notebook still clutched tight. Billy drove slow. The bakery appeared through the storm — warm wood, glowing windows, flower boxes streaming with rain. He parked and killed the engine. "Wait here till it clears," he said. "Then I'll get your car." Inside, Lacey spread her ruined sketches on a table by the window. The ink had blurred into smears. She wiped her eyes and looked around the bakery — the hanging plants, the fairy lights, the handmade shelves. Exactly the feeling she wanted for her own shop. Billy set a coffee in front of her and sat across the table, quiet, watching the water outside. "I lost my spot," she said. "The road's washed out. My car's stuck. Everything's wet." He glanced at the blurred sketches, then at the warm room around them. "Maybe," he said slowly, "you were looking at the wrong spot."
