Chapter 3

Laveau had beaten the beast back with fire and salt, but the guardian did not die. It circled her manor still, waiting. She fled with the copied vow before dawn. Now she stood in a weathered boathouse ringed with a salt circle, the vow spread flat on a plank table. She could read the words. She could not read the marsh spirit's binding language beneath them, the coiled marks that carried the real terms. Misread one, and she might tighten the curse instead of cutting it. Her great boa poured in through the door and settled its jeweled coils by the wall. It hissed at the marsh outside. Laveau needed someone who had survived this kind of reading. She had sent word into the woods for the root doctor. Ezekiel Moss came at first light. The masked, one-eyed root doctor stepped over the salt without disturbing a grain. He carried a pale egret on his arm, a spirit-bird strung with clay charms and dangling trinkets. He set the vow down and studied the coiled marks without a word. "You read swamp binding," Laveau said. "They said you tried it once and lived." "Once," Ezekiel said. "Read a spirit debt wrong. Buried my brother for it." He touched a charm at the egret's neck. "The bird reads. I don't trust my eye alone. Neither should you." The egret stepped onto the table. Its charms clicked against the wood. It bent its long neck and dragged its beak across the coiled marks, slow, line by line. Where the ink was true, the bird went still. At the fourth line it jerked back and shrieked. "There," Ezekiel said. "Freya copied it wrong. Or copied it wrong on purpose." He pointed to a knot of marks. "This says the firstborn is surrendered to lift the curse. The true binding says the firstborn is offered and refused, and the debt dies with the offering. One mark. Say it your way, you owe the spirit another daughter." Laveau's hands went cold. She had almost carried Freya's version to the altar. She had almost handed the spirit Simone's memory and a fresh throat. "Fix it," she said. Ezekiel guided the egret's beak. The bird scratched a new mark into the wax over the false one. The charms went quiet. "Now it reads clean," he said. "The words will lift the curse, not feed it." Laveau folded the corrected vow against her chest. She had the true rite at last. Then Ezekiel lifted his masked face toward the marsh. "Bird only reads what's written," he said. "It doesn't say where the altar stands. The spirit won't take the rite anywhere but its own ground." He looked at her. "And Freya knows that ground. You gave her your house. She still has the map." The egret shrieked once more at the water. Laveau understood. She had the words now. She did not have the place.
