Chapter 1

Leech crouched on a crate in the Shadowed Tavern, green fingers gripping a Mind Stone until it grew warm. The headquarters was ready. The tools were gathered. But tools meant nothing without hands to wield them. The Street Urchins needed to know what was possible now—that they could be more than scattered survivors begging for scraps. Leech's yellow teeth flashed in the dim light. It was time to bring the others in, to show them the future Leech had built in this hidden den beneath Pit Town's streets. The virus slid off the crate and moved through the tavern's damp rooms. Water dripped from rusted pipes overhead. Stolen swords lined one wall. A table held maps and coins. Everything was arranged, everything in place. Leech ran green fingers along the table's edge and felt something shift inside—not just hunger anymore, but purpose. The Street Urchins would gather here soon. They would learn to steal information, to strike from shadows, to take what the strong thought they owned. This tavern would become the heart of something new. From these wet pipes and dark corners, Leech would lift them all to power. Leech pulled out another Mind Stone from a leather pouch. The smooth oval surface caught the lamplight. These stones would let the Street Urchins talk without ever meeting in the open. Messages could flow through Pit Town like water through pipes. Leech set the stone on the table next to the first one. The virus stepped back and looked at the room one more time. The Shadowed Tavern stood ready. The path forward was clear. Soon the Street Urchins would rise from nothing to rule everything that moved in the dark. Outside, footsteps echoed through the pipes. The first recruits were coming. Leech moved to the tavern entrance and waited in shadow. When they arrived, the virus would show them the Mind Stones for secret messages. Show them the swords for quick strikes. Show them the Box of Shame—a cage of glowing laser beams that would hold their enemies for all of Pit Town to see. The Street Urchins would learn that power belonged to those who seized it. Leech's red tendrils twitched with excitement. The underworld was waiting to be claimed, and tonight, the claiming would begin.
