Chapter 12
Far from the pub, the burned barn still smoked. The fire had died to red coals in the cellar below the rotting floor. Down there, in the hole where Diana had once hidden, the dead rats lay in a heap. They had burned with the swarm's book. Now something moved in the ash.
The corpses pulsed. Slow at first, like a heartbeat under the char. Then faster. The ash shifted. A single bloated rat, its round body swollen and split, twitched its small black eyes open. It was not alive. Nothing here was alive. But the flesh remembered hunger.
The bones dragged toward each other. Little rat skulls fused. Ribs stretched into long fingers. The blackened skin of a hundred rats bound together into one hide. It climbed from the hole, dripping ash, and stood in the ruined cellar. A body taller than any man. Muscle knotted across its back. Its face was a rat's face, wide and snouted, split by long fangs. Its eyes were black holes.
This was Legion. Not the swarm anymore. Diana had burned the shirt and the book. She had cut Mark's soul loose. She thought she had killed the thing. She was wrong. The fire did not free the hunger. It gathered it. All the rage of the pack, all its endless want, poured into one shape.
Legion pressed a clawed hand against the cellar wall. The old boards cracked. It did not know Mark's name. It did not remember Diana's face, or the clearing, or the man it once had been. That part was gone, burned with the book. Only the hunger stayed. And the hunger had a body now, one that would not scatter under gunfire.
It threw back its head. No squeal came out. A low sound rolled from its chest, deep as a falling tree. The tall pines around the barn shivered. Moss dropped from their branches.
Legion tried to reach for the swarm, out of old habit. It found nothing. No thousand small mouths to command. No pack to send scouting through the dark. It was alone in one body for the first time. The loss made it stagger. Then the hunger swelled and filled the empty place.
It climbed out of the cellar, through the broken floor, into the black woods. Ash fell from its skin with each step. It sniffed the cold air. Somewhere far off, past the pines, a warm smell drifted from the half-dead town. People. Meat. The old woman. Diana.
Legion turned its snout toward the scent and started to walk. It wanted to be human again. It did not know how. But it knew the woman who had made it this way was near, and it would find her, and it would eat until the empty place stopped aching.
