Chapter 1

Lena Crane had cracked forty-one cases by refusing to believe in ghosts. Now she knelt on the floor of a stranger's house in Witchhazel, and her science was failing her. Someone was staging hauntings across this town. Doors slammed in locked rooms. Families fled at night. Lena meant to catch the person doing it. She clicked her penlight and aimed it at the thing on the floorboards. A porcelain doll lay on its back. Its painted eyes stared at nothing. Beside it spread a smear of pale residue, thin as frost, faintly glowing. Lena had never seen anything like it. She pulled a swab from her battered kit and dragged it through the smear. The swab came back clean. No color. No reaction on her test strip. She tried the luminol next, then the protein reagent. Nothing. Her kit was built to find blood, fibers, and fingerprints left by living people. It had no answer for this. "Come on," Lena muttered. She tapped the reagent bottle against her clipboard. Every tool she trusted gave her the same result. Blank. A sound came from the doorway. Lena spun, penlight raised. A lean black cat stood watching her. Old scars crossed its fur in pale lines. Its yellow eyes caught her light and held it. The cat did not run. It stepped to the doll, lowered its nose to the residue, then recoiled and hissed. Lena watched the animal react to something her instruments could not measure. The cat backed away, fur lifted, eyes fixed on the smear. An animal sensed it. Her chemistry did not. That gap mattered more than any blank test strip. She looked again at the pale residue near the doll. In the corner of the room she noticed a flower she had stepped past twice. A single lily stood in a dry vase, its petals gray and bloodless. No water. No soil. It should have wilted days ago. Lena leaned close. The same faint glow clung to the lily's stem and to the doll. Same residue. Two places. She understood then. Her kit answered the wrong question. It asked who touched this room. The real question was what the residue was made of, and no field swab could tell her. She needed a lab that handled the dead, not the living. She needed a mass spectrometer and someone trained to read it. Lena packed her useless strips and capped her swabs. She bagged a scraping of the residue, the lily, and left the doll where it lay. The black cat watched her from the doorway until she stood. She carried the evidence to her car and drove to the one building in the county with the machines she lacked. The county medical examiner's office sat dark except for one lit window. Lena knocked. A shape moved behind the glass. Her science had run out here. Inside, someone else's might begin.
