Chapter 1

Lena Graves had thirty-one souls. She needed one hundred before her skin began to crack. Tonight she hunted in the town square, under lamplight, where too many eyes could watch her work. She chose a lonely farmhand drinking from a flask by the fountain. She smiled her wide red smile, flashed her silver rings, and led him into the shadows. The dagger drank his soul in seconds. But a washerwoman screamed from a window. By dawn, three townsfolk whispered Lena's name and the missing men. She could not keep killing in the open. Witnesses left her exposed. She needed walls, a door, and a reason for men to come to her willingly. Lena walked the dark streets until she found it: a sagging bar wrapped in old gothic stone, its windows cracked, its lanterns burning weak and orange. A sign above the door hung crooked. Inside, lonely men hunched over their drinks. This was the trap she wanted. Behind the bar stood a man in a black vest, pouring wine without spilling a drop. His eyes caught the lamplight and glinted red. He watched Lena cross the room the way a wolf watches another wolf. He did not look afraid. That unsettled her more than any scream. "You smell like the grave," the bartender said. He slid a glass toward her. "We don't get many of your kind here." Lena set a silver ring on the counter between them. "I want this place. The lonely ones come to you. I only need them for a night." Damien Corvus did not take the ring. He leaned close, and his smile showed teeth too sharp for a man. "They come to me because I keep them breathing. Dead men don't pay for drinks." "I can make it worth your trouble," Lena said. She let her voice drop low and warm, the voice that had emptied a hundred hearts. It slid off him like rain off stone. "Save the charm," Damien said. He wiped the counter slow. "I've buried older things than you. But I'm bored, and you're interesting. So here's my offer. You hunt from my floor. You take the ones nobody will miss. And half of what you reap, you share with me." Lena's hand tightened on the ring. She had never shared a soul in two hundred years. But the square was ruined now, and the whispers would bring torches by week's end. She had no walls of her own and no time to build them. "Half," she said. The word tasted like rot. She pushed the ring across the counter and let it stay. Damien pocketed it. He poured her a second glass and raised his own. "Welcome home." She had her gathering place at last. She also had a partner who knew exactly what she was, and now held half her hunt in his hand.
