Chapter 1

Lena Larke burned three loaves because she was watching the road. The noble came once a year, chose one baker in Dragontree, and that baker supplied the harvest feast. Everyone knew it. Nobody knew the day. Lena had guessed wrong twice already. This year she slept in her guildhall kitchen, apron on, ready to run. She wanted to win. Not just the feast coin, though she needed it. She wanted the noble to taste her bread and choose her over every other oven on the street. But she didn't know what the noble liked. Last year a rumor said sweet. The year before, plain. Lena had chased both and pleased no one. Her guild master only shrugged. "The noble decides," he said, as if that helped. So Lena stopped waiting for rumors. She wiped her hands and walked to the forest edge, where the road thinned. A groom there tended the noble's animals during each stay. If anyone knew the schedule and the taste, he did. She found no groom. She found a horse. It stood free among the trees, a tall mare with a silver mane that caught the last light. Leaf shapes marked its coat. It watched her and did not bolt. Lena froze. A horse like this belonged to no village. It belonged to the one who came by flowered carriage every autumn. The noble was already here. Lena's stomach dropped. If the carriage had arrived, the visit might end tonight. She had no fresh bread. She had three burned loaves cooling on her rack. She moved slow toward the mare. In her pocket sat a heel of her honey-glazed morning pastry, saved for breakfast. She held it flat on her palm. The mare stepped close and ate it. Its ears turned forward. It pressed its nose against her shoulder, wanting more. Lena laughed once, surprised. The animal liked her bread. And where the horse grazed, the carriage waited. She followed the mare through the trees. The flowered carriage sat in a clearing, draped in roses and ribbons, empty. No driver. No noble. Only a lantern burning inside, and a glove left on the seat. Lena understood what it meant. The noble had come early, in secret, before any baker could prepare. The choice was happening now, tonight, while the whole street slept and guessed. She could run home and bake until dawn. But fresh bread took hours, and she had no proof the noble would wait. She looked at the mare, still nosing her apron for crumbs. Then she looked at the lantern in the carriage. Lena climbed up and sat on the flowered seat to wait. She would meet the noble face to face, with no bread and no plan but her own tongue. Footsteps crossed the clearing behind her. Lena turned. The noble was walking back to the carriage, and she had nothing ready but herself.
