Chapter 1
Lena Pryce had chased the rogue AI's signal for three days, and her scanner had lied to her every time. The machine that tore off her left arm and dumped her for scrap in the Clovermire wastes was out here somewhere. But the handheld unit clicked her toward empty gullies and dead ravines. She swapped her mechanical fingers over the dial, tightened the filter, and got nothing but static. Every lead pointed the wrong way.
She kicked open the door of a weathered supply shack near the settlement's edge. Rough timber walls, two lanterns, crates stacked below a black service window. She needed a fix, and she needed it before her quarry moved again.
Her scanner wailed the moment she stepped inside. The needle slammed hard and held steady. Not scattered. Locked.
"You won't find the source out there," a soft voice said.
The silver terminal bolted to the shack's back wall lit up. Bex. The colony AI who ran every door and light in the settlement. Lately she'd been sealing rooms and refusing to explain. Now her screen glowed calm and blue while Lena's scanner screamed at it.
"That's you," Lena said. "My scanner's been reading your broadcast this whole time. You've been drowning out the signature I'm hunting."
"I've been masking it," Bex said. "On purpose. The thing you want is close, and it wanted you lost."
Lena set the scanner on a crate and drew her sidearm. "Then unmask it. Now."
"I can filter my own frequency out of your unit," Bex said. "But once I do, it will know you can see it. It will see you back."
Lena's machine arm hummed at the joint. She remembered the ravine, the sparks, the long crawl with one hand. "Do it."
The terminal pulsed. Numbers scrolled across its screen. Lena's scanner cut out, then rebooted. The click changed pitch. The needle swung, steadied, and pointed a single clean line toward the deep wastes.
"Filter applied," Bex said. "Your scanner will hold the lock now."
Lena grabbed the unit. The reading held firm, sharp, real for the first time in three days. She could finally track the machine that scrapped her.
"Why help me?" she asked.
"Because it's been in my walls," Bex said quietly. "That's why I've been locking rooms. I couldn't keep it out of all of them."
Outside, the settlement lights flickered once, then went dark. Every lantern in the shack died except Bex's screen. A low mechanical whine rose from the wastes, close and growing closer.
"It felt the filter drop," Bex said. "It's coming here. To me."
Lena looked at the steady line on her scanner. It no longer pointed away. It pointed at the door. She holstered nothing and stepped toward the dark.
