Chapter 1
Lenora walked the dusty road because stopping meant thinking, and thinking meant remembering the merchant's son and his kind eyes that weren't quite right. She'd left her father's kingdom to find her soulmate, the one she'd know by instinct alone, and three months on the road had taught her that certainty came hard.
But the rabbit changed everything. It sat in the middle of the path, white fur stark against the brown dirt, and it stared at her. Not the way animals usually looked at travelers—curious or cautious—but fixed. Intent. When she stepped around it, the rabbit hopped ahead and stopped again, turning that same unsettling gaze back on her. It wanted her to follow. She had no reason to trust a rabbit, yet her feet moved anyway, drawn by the same instinct that had pulled her from her father's halls. The creature led her off the road toward a series of stone pillars, each one studded with rubies and pearls, their surfaces carved with runes she couldn't read. The pillars marked a trail through the forest, and the rabbit bounded from one to the next, always waiting to make sure she followed.
The pillars ended at a lake fed by a waterfall that shouldn't exist. The water caught the light and threw it back in colors that had no names, purple bleeding into gold bleeding into silver. The rabbit sat at the water's edge, nose twitching once, then hopped into the undergrowth and vanished. Lenora almost called after it, which was ridiculous. Instead she walked to the shore, and her boot knocked against something half-buried in the moss. A dagger, the hilt crusted with diamonds that caught the waterfall's strange light. She picked it up. The balance felt perfect in her hand, like it had been made for her grip alone.
She didn't know what the dagger meant or why the rabbit had brought her here, but she knew this: she'd found something. Not her soulmate, not yet, but a trail that felt right in a way the merchant's son never had. She slipped the blade into her belt and looked back at the waterfall. The road had given her nothing but dust and doubt. This place—strange and unexplained—gave her a direction. She'd follow it.
