Chapter 1
Leon stepped out from the shadow of the palace wall and into the narrow alley where the man was waiting. The stranger's hands shook as he pressed a folded paper toward Leon's chest. "Names," the man whispered. "The ones who decide everything behind the throne." Leon didn't reach for it. He counted three breaths, watching the man's eyes dart left, then right, then back to Leon's face. This was either the break he'd been building toward for months, or the trap that would end it all.
Leon shifted his weight and the stranger flinched. "Not here," Leon said. He turned without waiting for an answer and walked toward the vine-covered pavilion at the edge of the garden quarter. The little tea house was public enough to keep the stranger honest, quiet enough to hear a wrong word. He chose a table near the back where fireflies drifted past hanging vines, and he watched the street through the doorway. The stranger sat across from him and slid the paper forward again. Leon still didn't touch it. Instead, he studied the man's coat, the mud on his boots, the way his fingers drummed against the table. Then he saw it: a second shadow crossing the threshold. Someone had followed them here. Leon lifted two fingers from the table, a signal to no one, a test. The stranger's eyes flicked toward the door. He knew. Leon stood, left the paper on the table, and walked out through the side entrance. The network was still his, but he'd just learned the first name on that list without ever opening it: whoever sent the shadow was afraid.
He moved through the garden in silence, passing beneath snow-dusted bamboo that glowed with trapped fireflies. The cold pressed against his face. He counted his steps and listened for footfalls behind him, but heard nothing except his own breath. When he reached the cluster of tall stalks near the outer wall, he stopped and waited. A shape moved between the bamboo, hesitant, then still. Leon spoke without turning. "You can follow me back to the palace or walk away now." The shape didn't answer. Leon started walking again. He didn't look back. By the time he reached the palace gate, he was alone. The stranger was a dead end, but the watcher was real. That meant someone powerful knew he was building something. Leon had his first confirmation that the network mattered.
Back in his room, Leon bolted the door and sat at his desk. He didn't write down what had happened. The stranger would disappear, either by choice or by force. The watcher would report back to whoever sent them. And Leon would wait. He'd tested the weight of his network tonight and found it strong enough to draw attention from people who preferred to stay hidden. That was progress. His father would call it reckless. Leon called it the beginning. Tomorrow he would reach out to the delivery boy on Cress Street. The baker could wait a little longer. But now Leon knew his movements were being tracked, and that changed everything. He would build slower. He would trust no one new until he understood who had sent the shadow. The network had just become real.
