Chapter 1

Liam Vale gave the same wildflower to three women before noon, and by dusk the whole town knew his trick. He learned this when the baker's wife slammed her shutters as he passed. His gold tooth flashed in a smile that no one returned. For years his charm had opened every door in this town. Now the doors were closing, and only one woman had ever seen through him from the start. She sold herbs from a stall near his apartment. She had refused his flower on his first day here, and every day since. "Save it for someone who doesn't count petals," she'd said. That refusal had gnawed at him ever since. He wanted her to look at him once without that flat, knowing stare. Winning her had become the only thing that mattered. Now the gossip had reached her. Liam saw it happen. A woman leaned close to the herb-seller and whispered, glancing his way. The herb-seller's mouth went hard. She caught his eye and shook her head slowly, as if he'd proved something she already believed. Liam climbed the stairs to his apartment. The street-facing windows let in the afternoon light. His basset hound lay across the doorway, ears spread flat on the floor, too lazy to lift its head. Liam sat beside the dog and stared at his hands. He could keep lying. He could buy fresh flowers, tell a smoother story, charm his way past the gossip. That plan had always worked before. But he pictured the herb-seller shaking her head, and he knew a better lie would only sink him deeper. So he did something he had never done. He gathered every wilted flower from his apartment, the whole recycled bunch, and carried them down to the street. He walked to her stall in full view of the town. He set the dead flowers on her counter. "These are the ones," he said. "The same flowers, passed around all morning. You were right about me from the first day. I'm not giving you one. I'm showing you the trick instead." The herb-seller stared at the sad brown pile. Around them, neighbors stopped to watch. She picked up a stem and turned it in her fingers. "Why show me?" she asked. "Because you're the only person here I don't want to fool," he said. She didn't smile. But she didn't send him away either. She set the stem down and studied his face, longer than she ever had. "That took nerve," she said at last. "It doesn't make me trust you." She paused. "But come back tomorrow. Empty-handed. We'll see what you say when you've got nothing to sell." Liam walked home lighter and heavier at once. He had killed the trick that made him charming. Now he had nothing to hide behind, and a woman who expected him to prove it. Tomorrow he would face her with empty hands, and no idea what to say.
