Chapter 3

The tea had become a habit. Every morning Liam sat at the herb-seller's stall, and every morning they talked of nothing. The weather. Which roots sold well. Whether his dog had slept. Liam counted these visits as progress, but this morning he saw the truth. He knew her hands, her voice, the way she trimmed her stems. He did not know one true thing she wanted from her life. He had been trading small talk, safe and empty. Small talk was just another kind of charm. He set down his cup. "I don't know anything about you," he said. "I come here every day and I ask you nothing that matters." She kept sorting a bundle of dried leaves. "Most people don't," she said. "They like the tea." "I want to know what you want," Liam said. "Not to sell you something. I just want to know." She stopped sorting. For a moment she said nothing, and Liam thought he had pushed too far. A voice cut in from the side. "Careful. He's fishing." The purple-haired woman leaned against the stall, a small padlock swinging at her throat. She had watched Liam confess days ago, and she still watched him like a cat watches a bird. "Men like him always want something." "I know what he is," the herb-seller said. She looked at Liam. "But he asked. That's new." The purple-haired woman shrugged and drifted off to finger a pot of climbing roses at the next stall, listening without pretending not to. The herb-seller wiped her hands on her apron. "I don't want this stall forever," she said. "My mother ran it. Her mother too. Everyone thinks I'll die behind this counter." She looked past Liam, at the street. "I want to grow things on real land. A field. Not pots on a table. But land costs more than dried leaves ever bring." Liam did not reach for a clever answer. He let it sit. "Why haven't you left?" "Because leaving is a risk, and staying is safe," she said. "You'd know that. You never risked the real you either." The words landed hard. She had turned his own confession back on him, and she was right. They were the same kind of coward, hiding behind what felt safe. "Thank you," Liam said. "For telling me a true thing." She studied him. "You didn't try to fix it. Or promise me the land." A small surprise crossed her face. "That's the first time you've heard something and not sold me a solution." Liam walked home lighter and heavier at once. He finally knew what she wanted. A field of her own. But knowing it changed everything. She saw them as two people who never risked anything real. If he wanted her to see him differently, small talk and honesty were no longer enough. He had to do something brave, something that cost him. And he had no idea yet what that would be.
