Chapter 4

Librae swam down through the archway's dark water until the wreck loomed beneath them. The hull lay split on the seafloor, sails still faintly lit in fading reds and blues. Crystallized memory formed trails along the sand like frozen light. Librae found Cancer Mercury near the stern, cradling a cluster of glowing mushrooms in her palm, her hood drawn low, small pink wings folded against her back. "You came down here for a reason," Cancer Mercury said. She did not look surprised. She looked tired. Librae opened their notebook underwater. The pages stayed dry. "I adjusted a current three months ago. It moved your ship into the rocks. I didn't know you were in the equation. I do now." Cancer Mercury studied them for a long moment. "That is the first honest sentence anyone has said to me since the hull broke." She tilted her head toward the wreck. "The scales sent you for cargo. I moved it deeper after the trails gave me away." "Something is guarding it," Librae said. "Two somethings." She began to swim, and Librae followed. "I did not put them there. They arrived with the leaks." Inside the wreck, the water thickened. Cancer Mercury stopped at a warped door and pushed it open with one hand. A small ornate inkwell rested on a crate. Black tendrils rose from its mouth, coiling into a shape with hollow eyes and calligraphic limbs. Beside it hung a rusted cage, and inside the cage a pale girl's face wept dark ink down cracked cheeks. Further in, a second figure drifted between the beams — a girl with neon-yellow eyes and long dark hair, dressed in trailing blue. "The ink one writes what I try to forget," Cancer Mercury said. "The caged one holds what I refuse to release. The girl in blue is a memory that learned to walk." She glanced at Librae. "They will not let you touch the cargo unless the math includes them." Librae stared. Three variables they had never once written down. Not abstractions. People, shaped by loss they had helped cause. They knelt in the silt and wrote three new names beside Cancer Mercury's on the twenty-eighth orb. The ink djinn stilled. The caged face closed its eyes. The neon girl drifted aside. Librae reached past them and lifted the surviving cargo — a small crate of intact memory bottles, cold and humming. "You know what this means," Cancer Mercury said quietly. "You cannot correct me without asking me." "I know," Librae said. They rose through the wreck with the crate held against their chest. Above them, faint through the water, a chime rang — the jester's scales, unlocking. But the crate in their arms felt heavier than bronze. Three more names. Three more debts they had not yet begun to pay.
