Chapter 6

Liliana walked home with the memory of the silver hand still bright in her mind. She had asked to hear the king's voice. He had taken her heart of stone and drawn it into the dark. Now the next visit belonged to her, and she did not know what to carry. A voice was not a hand. A voice was a person opening a door. She could not guess what would make a king who had sworn off love speak aloud to a pink ape with lilies in her fur. She needed counsel, and she knew where to find it. She found Petal Willowbloom on the path near the hollow oak, sitting cross-legged on a cushioned bench built into a wide window frame someone had set among the roots. Petal was sorting small things from a carved trunk on her lap. The trunk was dark wood, patterned with butterflies and river stones. Liliana sat on the far cushion and told the whole visit plainly. The petal. The breath. The stone heart. The request for a voice. She said she had nothing left to offer that felt equal to speech. Petal listened without moving. When Liliana finished, Petal closed the trunk and set her hand flat on the lid. "He kept quiet a long time," Petal said. "A voice costs him more than a sign. You cannot buy it with another object." She looked at Liliana. "Bring him something only you can give. Not made. Yours already." Liliana said she did not understand. Petal opened the trunk again and took out a small folded square of linen. Inside was a scrap of paper with three lines in a stranger's hand. "People leave me pieces of themselves," Petal said. "Secrets. Things they cannot say to anyone else. That is what you carry too. You listen. You hold. Give him one thing you have never told." Liliana felt the word sit in her chest. Needed. She had carried it two years. She said it aloud to Petal, the whole small story of it, to test whether she could. Petal did not flinch. She only nodded once and put the linen back. Liliana walked to the shadow's edge before dusk. She did not bring a carving or a stone. She stood at the line where the light ended and spoke into the dark. She told the king what her partner had said the night she left. She told him about the word needed, and how she still turned it in her hands. She said she had come to him because he had chosen to be alone, and she wanted to know if a person could choose that and still be reached. She waited. From inside the dark, low and rough as bark splitting, a voice answered. One word. "Come." Then the forest was quiet again. Liliana stood shaking. She had what she came for. Now she had to return.
