Chapter 1

Lilith held her youngest son's hand and counted the gray hairs at her husband's temple. Three now. Last winter there were none. She was a sea goddess, part siren, part immortal, and she would live ten thousand years. Her husband and three children would not. That truth sat in her chest like a stone. She meant to change it. She meant to weave a spell that lasted forever and bind eternity to the people she loved. But she had never woven anything meant to last. Her magic pulled tides and calmed storms. It faded by morning. To bind a soul against death, she needed magic that never let go. She did not know where such a thing was taught. No temple hall held it. No shell scroll named it. That night she left her golden temple and swam deep, past the reefs, into the cold dark. A tiny winged pixie darted ahead of her, glowing faint blue. It had visited her garden for years, drifting on pixie dust from a glowing oak on the shore. Tonight it would not stop tugging at her hair. "Slow down," Lilith said. The pixie spun and pointed down. Below her rose a drowned building. Broken windows stared like empty eyes. Green weed hung from cracked stone columns. She saw doors half swallowed by the seabed. It was a library, sunk long ago, its shelves dark with time. Lilith pushed the doors open. Inside, water hung still and heavy. Books floated in slow circles, their pages sealed by some old magic that kept them whole. She reached for one. It did not crumble. The spell holding it had lasted a thousand years. That was what she needed. Magic that refused to end. A pale light moved between the shelves. Lilith turned. A small figure stood on the broken stairs, thin and worn, her white hair drifting like smoke. Her dress hung in tatters. Her blue eyes were old and tired. "No one comes here," the figure said. "They forgot me, like they forgot this place." Lilith knew her then. A moon goddess, cast out of memory, older than the sea. "You kept these books whole," Lilith said. "For centuries." "I keep what others let rot." Selene Lumaris tilted her head. "You want the long magic. The kind that outlives the caster." "I want it for my family. My husband is aging. My children will follow." Selene studied her a long moment. "Everlasting magic has a price. It always takes as much as it gives." She lifted a thin hand toward the floating shelves. "I can teach you. But you will not thank me for it." Lilith looked at the whole, unrotted books. She thought of three gray hairs. "Teach me," she said. Selene turned and climbed the broken stairs. "Then follow. And leave your certainty at the door."
