Chapter 27

Lilith held the thread off alone for three days. Each morning she sang a memory back before it could tear loose. But she was tired. The thread never slept, and she could not sing forever. She sat in her memory keep, the small stone sanctuary where she stored her family's sealed records. She looked at the lit alcoves and understood the truth. She was not winning. She was only slowing the bleed. The thread would hunt until she died, and she could not die. She had to end it at the source. She went to the one place the thread was born. She called Mnemora to the keep. The goddess of memory came in her white gown, gold light at her fingertips. Mnemora had sealed every record here. She spoke plainly, as always. "You cannot outlast it," she said. "I told you. I cannot seal every memory." Lilith nodded. "Then I stop feeding it. The thread hunts because the spell is still open. I close the spell." Mnemora went still. "Closing it means giving back what it wants. A memory offered on purpose. Freely. Not stolen." Lilith already knew which one. The night Tre lay sick. The fear that started all of this. She had given it to the dragon long ago and forgotten it. But the empty place remained. She would offer the empty place itself, the last thing the thread still searched for. She needed to hold steady while she did it. The thread would fight hardest at the end. She summoned her enchanted seahorse and the unicorn. The seahorse glowed teal at her throat and fed her breath. The unicorn stood beside her, its horn against her shoulder, an anchor of bone and light. Once she had wronged this creature. Now it braced her. "Hold me," she told them. "However hard it pulls." Lilith sang. Not to save a memory this time, but to release one. She reached for the hollow the fear had left and gave it up on purpose. The thread lunged for it, greedy. The cold ripped through her skull. She staggered. The unicorn pressed harder. The seahorse fed her one more breath. She held the note and let the empty place go into the thread's open mouth. Mnemora raised her hands. Gold light closed over the wound the thread left behind, sealing it shut for good. The cold stopped. Lilith felt the silence in her head, sudden and total. No pulling. No hunt. She waited for it to start again. It did not. The thread was gone. "It's over," Mnemora said. She did not repeat it. Lilith sank against the unicorn and breathed. Her memories were safe at last, sealed and no longer chased. But her family's memory losses were still bound to hers forever, and the binding spell that tied their lives to her own remained uncast in its final, unbreakable form. The hunt had ended. The spell was not yet whole.
